Design Light-Luminaire project

This designed luminaire is structured in a way to boost the user’s creativity as well as let them enjoy the interactive abilities of the light source, by placing and arranging the six ‘building blocks’, provided, into any layout which they desire.  The main design focuses were to have a light source that is energy efficient, mobile, can help with tasks, adjustable and a luminaire that does not take much space.  The concept came form the question of “how might we cover light?”.  From this the shape developed and transformed multiple times into the final luminaire design. Experimentation was done on what shape would benefit the light source the most and would be most efficient and also what light source to use for the luminaire.

First was the use of LED strip lighting, but this use made the light too difficult to build because of the parts not being easy to get hold of in our country and complications of dismantling and probably damaging the LED. Too much labour would have been put into one modular piece of the lamp form which resulted in rather using cool white LED fairy lights to illuminate the light and still create the desired effect. The final model represents a pristine and minimalist look that attracts attention. It is easy to use because of the user only needing to change the batteries and play with their building blocks.

In conclusion, the luminaire design provides efficient light, uses an energy efficient light source and can be used in ambient, commercial and workspace environments.

The drive for this design was to let the user become the creator and have control of the light, hence the term “Unplugged”.
